My kayak club, Hui Wa'a Kaukahi, has about twenty fishermen and women among its members. We paddle all around Oahu and make neighbor island trips. The fisherpeople usually drag a lure or bait along as we make our way on 7 to 10 mile paddles. Members have hauled in mahimahi, ulua, shibi, uku, kahala and ono. Our first sailfish was caught this past Saturday three miles off of Laie by Punahou grad Steve Harris. It put up an epic battle that's too long to describe in this forum, but watch for an article in the HFN as I'm pretty sure he'll submit something. I posted a photo. He had to paddle all the way into Malaekahana with this monster on his lap! To top things off, earlier he landed a 13 pound ulua.
You can find out more about Hui Wa'a Kaukahi at www.huiwaa.org. All of the club activities are posted there. We run a progressive kayak fishing tournament every year. If you're free tonight (9/16/08) there will be a fishing tales presentation at the club's monthly meeting. Meeting starts at 7 pm at the Church of the Crossroads (next to the ex-Varsity theater). We're also having a K-Bay papio fishing tourney this weekend at Kuuloa Beach Park. Non-members are welcome to participate. Heaviest papio wins a new kayak from Go Bananas!

Thanks for sharing that picture of your friend Steve Harris! Totally Awesome! Friends of mine her in California that fish from boogie boards get pulled around by striped bass, halibut and salmon-I can only imagine what a ride it must have been after hooking that sailfish!!
